M·A·C Cosmetics has teamed with Dutch industrial designer Marcel Wanders for his first crack at cosmetics packaging, with the brand’s 2010 holiday makeup collection. Wanders’ design philosophy is “to bring beauty to the things that we see all the time; to raise the aesthetic bar and elevate the normality of the everyday. It’s not just about function, it’s about having something you really love and caring about the details that surround you,” he says. Design sophisticates and savvy consumers are bound to become avid collectors of the limited edition range, which includes lipstick, lipgloss, Sheer Mystery Powder, Air of Style Scent Concentrate, and Wanders’ signature brush and clutch creations ($18-$75). What better “framework” would hold the rich palette, which M·A·C describes as “inspired by 17th-century Flemish painting, and particularly, Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring.” According to James Gager, senior vice president and creative director, M·A·C, Wanders was given free reign when it came to working on the package design for the collection, which still retains the brand’s signature monochromatic look with sleek black lines and a tactile finish.
